Mindfulness and Acceptance Commitment Therapy (ACT) approaches each utilise creative and practical ways of living with the challenges of chronic pain and illness. These therapeutic modalities each emphasise ways of learning to live more skilfully with chronic pain and chronic illness, in order to live a more fulfilling life.
Mindfulness and ACT draw on ancient Eastern and Western philosophies and apply some of the ideas, practices and stances to the problems of living with pain and illness. They take the stance of giving up the battle with pain and illness in favour of negotiating a peace, which can open up possibilities more satisfying living.
An important aspect of therapy with Mindfulness and ACT is directed towards establishing and putting into action goals which are in line with the individual’s valued ways of living – actions that are in tune with what is important to them.
Mindfulness and ACT aim to create flexibility and change around a person’s habitual reactions and to move away from being “stuck” in old ways of reacting to pain and illness. Instead they encourage a shift towards activities that move the person in the direction of the valuable life they want to live.
